Not So Simple
I languished in contented bliss, curled up against Ryker in the middle of the bed, half buried beneath the yeti fur blanket. He nuzzled closer, and I ran the tips of my fingers along the edge of his wing that was draped across me. The flickering fire light shimmered over the black feathers, revealing a sheen of purple and green that danced within the blackness, mesmerizing me.
âHow are you feeling?â Ryker whispered against my neck, sending pleasant shivers through me and reawakening my carnal desires.
My body was still sore from all it had endured the past two days, but the pain was a dull ache compared to the elation encompassing me like a warm blanket. Ryker loved me. And if his words hadnât been enough to convince me last night, his actions certainly had been. I snuggled closer, enjoying the feel of his skin against mine. âLike I never want to leave. I just want to stay here with you forever and hide from the world and all of our problems.â
He chuckled, leaving a trail of kisses along my jaw to my lips. Heat pooled within me before his lips brushed the hollow of my throat where the necklace heâd given me had once resided.
I pulled away, guilt dampening my happiness. âIâm sorry. I lost the necklace whenââ
âKaleah, itâs okay. Youâre alive and here, thatâs all that matters.â He propped himself up on one arm. âAnd as much as Iâd love to fulfill your wishes, we should probably show our faces sometime.â
âNot yet,â I teased. âIâm sure no one wants to see your face as much as I do.â I kissed him, relishing the touch of his lips and the happy little thrills dancing within me. He stroked his fingers up and down my spine, making it even harder to concentrate before he pulled away with a sigh.
He slipped out from beneath the covers, and I leaned back on the bed, enjoying the show as he found his scattered articles of clothing and got dressed. When he got to the tunic, he eyed it warily, glancing over his shoulder at his wings. Iâd been able to get away with low backed dresses, but I didnât think that would work so well for Ryker. Not that I would complain if he remained shirtless. The flickering firelight highlighted the muscles along his toned body and turned my insides molten.
His brow scrunched and a moment later his wings rippled and contorted, shifting back into his skin until they were completely gone. I sat up straight, holding the sheet to my bare chest. âWill it hurt the next time you bring them out?â
He rolled his shoulders as if readjusting to the lighter weight. âNo. The first time is always the worst. Although I used to have wings, sealing them severed my connection, so it was like the first time all over again when you broke the seals.â
âIâm sorryââ
âIâm not.â He leaned over the bed to kiss my forehead, and I had to fight the urge not to drag him back down into the cloud covers with me.
